Could anyone point me in the right direction to set up a subscription that has a low cost introductory period and then automatically upgrades to a higher recurring payment for the rest of the period. I don't particularly want to email members asking them to upgrade. Would rather their subscription just upgraded automatically if they do not cancel their subscription.

You can set this up in the product manage area, just set the trial 1 price for your low price introduction, and the regular price to your yearly fee.
