I'd like to install phpBB3 to our site but I'd like the bulletin board available to non-membership and one area to membership. What's the best way to set this up? I haven't installed any plug-ins yet...

PHPBB3 will allow you to set different access to each of the forums/subforums.
Ex: you can set registered to use the registered forum, but not the gold forum.

You can see a demo here: PHPBB3 aMember integration

So where should I install the phpBB3 so that both members and non-members can access it? I'd like the members to be automatically be set up for the forum when the subscribe to the website. Non-members can sign-up on their own.

You can place it in a subdirectory of your main site
    ex: yoursite.com/forum

Then its a matter of integrating it with amember.
What do you mean by non-members? just visitors or free members.

You should have all signups going thru amember.

Thanks David - non-members would be visitors and non-members - I just didn't know if members would be automatically set-up (username & passwords) if I installed bb software on the unsecured side (non amember). I'm kind of new at this (obviously!). So I must install the plug-in for phpbb3 (since I don't have it already) from amember too, correct? Does it matter which I do first - e.g. install bb software vs. install plug-in? I'm hoping that it's okay to set-up the bb first so that I know that it's working correctly.

    Thanks for your patience!!

Set up your BB first, set up your groups.
Then you can buy the plugin and integrate.
