I am trying amember out for my company and have installed/uninstalled about 8 times : ) I keep getting the dreaded error message about it not being in binary form. I have switched to about three different ftp programs and the last one I used is cuteftp and it said that it uploaded them all in binary. I was able to get to step 4 of the installation process, but when I try to click on the link for the admin, signup etc. it tells me the error message. So... can someone tell me what I am doing wrong or perhaps suggest a better ftp program? Thank you.
Cuteftp is perfectly fine. We personally use WSFTP but have used cureftp dozens of times in the past. Not sure how you are setting the program to load in binary form but theres nothing wrong with cuteftp as an ftp program. You are either setting it wrongly or have a bad copy. ANY ftp program will upload in binary for you if set to do so. There are DOZENS of free ftp programs that will do it, but I'd be first of all assuming your copy of cuteftp is bad and needs replacing OR more likely you are not setting it to upload in binary format correctly. Read its help file or documentation. Just in case you are not following the correct instructions. 1. Unzip the distribution of the script. To do this you will need an unzipping utility with support for long filenames. WinZip is suitable, or just try to double-click on the ZIP archive - Windows XP has built-in unpacker. 2. You now need to FTP the script files to your server, using an FTP client such as WS_FTP. It is important that aMember files are copied to the correct place in your directory structure. The aMember folder should be copied to your public HTML directory - this is the directory where your home page is located, often called 'html_docs', 'public_html' or something similar. FTP the entire aMember folder to this directory making sure that you transfer the files in BINARY mode. There is no need to set up the folders on the server side, you can copy the whole directory over in a single step. 3. Browse to http://www.yoursite.com/amember/setup.php 4. Follow Web Based Setup script instructions; 5. If the setup script requires, the following folders must be made writeable for the script: o amember/data/ o amember/data/new_rewrite/ This usually means CHMOD to permissions 707, 770 or 777. Which one will depend on your server configuration. Try 707, if you get an error in the installation procedure you can change it to 777. If you are unsure about how to CHMOD your files, please see here. Please do chmod only if the setup script requires. 6. Once you get "Setup Finished" screen, go to Initial Setup
