This seems so easy to do yet is so annoying.... Following the directions in a forum post, I altered the original header and footer html templates (after carefully saving and re-naming the originals. I got a new design which looks OK, but I wanted to try something else, so I re-named the new header and footer templates and then got the old ones back under their original names expecting to see standard login page layout. Imagine my surprise when I saw the redesign still there, despite my having renamed it and brought the old original templates back. This was before I knew about layout.html, by the way. So.... my question is, how do I actually and finally get rid of the old design and get back to the original templates for the login and other pages? Are there other files I need to edit as well? I don't understand how files which are renamed and no longer referenced are still showing up!
There are some strange looking files in the templates_c directory... what are they for? and do I just delete?
They are compiled versions of the templates. Find the ones that relate to your footer & header (looks similar to %%190^%%1901021975^header.html.php) and delete. They will be recompiled. Another way is to rename unwanted template but BEFORE renaming original back access your site area that uses these files and you should get a Smarty error cannot find resource. Now rename original files back and you're done. Remember to do a 'control-F5' on your computer first as the page could be being loaded from its cashe rather than downloading it again in its changed version.
OK, so I deleted them and now I've just got a horrid mess on the screen!! When do they get recompiled??
Bit premature, but the problem still remains. If I get rid of my edited versions of the templates, I get gibberish. If I replace the originals with my new versions, it's fine. I simply can't seem to revert to the original. Now, as I have purchased amSalesPages with the aim of making my headers an d footers look like the membership site, this is now getting annoying. Is there anywhere else that i need to look in order to revert back to the original look and then have the ability to allow amSalesPage plugin do its thing? I contacted Ken, the originator of the plugin and he kindly looked around for me but was equally stumped by the fact that it wouldn't respond to anything he did. So, if there are other suggestions, I'd love to hear them. (Plus I'm sure Ken would if I found out!)
I had your original problem, but deleting the files (header.html or layout.html whichever one you modded) from template_c directory fixed it. The problem was fixed but because of special characters in the files, FileZilla FTP could not delete them, I had to go into the ISP control panel file mgr to actually make them go away for good. Once they are deleted and the original templates restored, simply accessing the secure page should recompile them. At least it did for me.
Thanks, but I have been able to delete the modded files successfully. Then, the originals don't show up, just a nasty unformatted mess. I rename them yet again (taking the old ones out and putting the new ones back again) and immediately they are compiled ok, but it's the modded ones which show up. I simply can't get back to the original ones at all and I appear to be stuck using the ones I've modded, no matter what I try, and I REALLY want to alter them to reflect the membership site better, per amSalesPages plugin.....Aaaaaaarrrggh!
Would it be possible to add a post telling us how this was resolved? It's like reading a whodunnit only to find the last chapter has been ripped out....
This post was in january so I don't remember what was the problem. But if you want to restore original aMember templates, just rename your current templates folder to templates.old Then upload original templates to /templates/ folder and delete everything from /amember/templates_c/ folder.
