email setup error in Smarty.class.php

    When I attempt to test the "Email System Configuration", I'm getting the following error:

    ERROR [256] Smarty error: [in admin/email_test.html line 443]: syntax error: invalid attribute name: '<span' (Smarty_Compiler.class.php, line 1497) in line 1102 of file /home/.gilligan/auroram42/www.sciencelearningspace.com/members/smarty/Smarty.class.php

    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
