That is pretty old thread. What version of aMember do you have? That functionality already should be available in latest aMember versions.

Please double check connection settings, make sure that you have set correct port, and that port is open. Also try to configure your email client with the same settings and try to send message from it.
Change SMTP Security setting to SSL and check again. I use my personal gmail address on my test installation. and it works without a problem with these settings.
