How do I permanently remove a user?

I have a user that I deleted from the aMember admin controls, but I still can't user that username for a new account. When I search for it or look in the db nothing comes up, but aMEmber seems to remember the username. How can I delete it?

Try updating the database after deleting. Use the Rebuild DB link in the admin.

I already did, but that username won't go away (I can't create a new account with the same name). It doesn't show up in the db though.
