Since our membership system is not working, how does one do a complete restore while not touching the database?

If you did a backup prior to the upgrade can you not just re upload that file Set? I'm not sure if the 4.5 database is different from the 4.4 but I would expect that you would have to restore that as well though.
We thought uploading the backup would revert us back to our working system, too. But that produced more problems. At the moment, our membership system is down and nothing we've done has solved the problem. As far as we can tell, there isn't any information available to instruct us on how to resurrect a corrupted system.
