using pro and .htpasswd type protection.

i'm having a problem where from time to time i get an error of can't open for writing on my amember/data/.htpasswd and /amember/data/.htgroup
    they are both 644 permissions.

i set them to 666 and all works again. so what should the permission be and how come it works ok for a while and then breaks without me doing anything ? i'm not sure if its something ownership wise or my webhost doing something eg. restoring the file as my user when it should be owned by apache or something ? i wondered if it was to do timewise with when a download expires and its removing details from the file and thus the file is empty ?
    Basically any suggestions ?

Please have a look to FAQ, it is a problem and must be resolved (it's easy).

have done, i know that part and have been correcting it, just i've been correcting it on a monthly basis and wondered if there was something about amember adding/removing users doing it. apparently not.
thats ok though as its not me changing the permissions it must be my webhost doing something (restore from backup as my user not webuser perhaps).
    thanks.
