I have everything set-up and working beuatifully but I cannot get anyone to log-in to protected area...noone.

maybe I misread the manual...am I supposed to create the .htaccess file and drop it in the protected directory via ftp?

first off Mac OS X won't let you save anything with a .in front of the file, secondly when I drop in a htaccess file and the manually change it .htaccess, after I attempt a login the file is magically deleted or I get error 500 that the script has crashed.

hhere is the code I put in the text file:
    AuthType Basic
    AuthName "Members Only"
    AuthUserFile /home/blackhat/public_html/www/amember/data/.htpasswd
    AuthGroupFile /home/blackhat/public_html/www/amember/data/.htgroup
    Require valid-user

I am trying to protcte the directory /amember/data/stream/

    (i also tried writing /home/blackhat/public_html/www/amember/data/stream/.htpasswd

Will I need to re-enter current users once this is corrected?

Have you tried to use aMember CP -> Protect Folders function?
