Name field required or not required option?

I was looking for a setting that disabled the "Your Name - First name/Last name" fields in the signup form from being required but can't find it. Is it possible to make these fields optional like others?

There's no option for this, so it would require some customization.

Has this been added yet? Is there any code posted for this yet?

While it's good to have generally for all emailing purposes, I wouldn't want to require this for all members if they decide that they don't want to put in their real name. This should be an easy hack to "unrequire" and should probably be a toggle switch in the back end.

Alexander - awesome. I solved the problem temporarily by creating two forms for two different members and hiding the forms and pre-filling in details for the ones it is optional.
