    Hello,

I'm a new aMember user and I'm creating a membership website for supporting caregivers. The main focus of this site will be the community forum. In addition to a bulletin board, it should allow members to have their own member page where they can upload personal info and pictures. My goal is to have a membership of 1000 to 3000.

I'm overwhelmed with the number of plugins available and I'm not sure how to go about sorting through them all. Can someone recommend one that has worked well for them.

By the way, I'm pretty fast at picking up programming but I'm a novice at php.

    Thanks very much,
    Brian Cummings

I think Joomla with community builder and fireboard (forum) will handle what you are looking for. I haven't used community builder yet but from other sites I've seen with it, it has the "member page" function you want. I am using joomla/amember and fireboard and am very happy with the way it functions together.

    David,

I've seen your posts on here before and you obviously have some experience. How steep do you think the learning curve will be for the installation of Joomla with those modules? I'm wondering if I wouldn't be better off hiring someone to do that, providing it can be done within my modest budget.

Don't get wrong, I enjoy learning the skills to change and manage my website. I'm just thinking about the investment in time.

    Thanks for your fast response.

It depends on if you include uploading time- that can take a bit.

I think it should take a few hours but...

Some people also run into server issues. For example they can't use an htaccess file's mod_rewrite, or there server has -enable-versioning which conflicts with php5 and ioncube loader when using php_include to protect content.

You can check to see if you have -enable-versioning in amember. go to your setup, version info, and search for it. If you dont see it, thats good. You can also ask your host to disable it.

Have you already installed aMember and Joomla? I think this takes more time than the integration and protection.

    Community Builder example

Feel free to poke around my site, it's setup with the component's you're looking for including community builder/joomla/amember ...

    http://www.MySmallBizU.com/jmaduk is my "Face Page.

I'm using joomlaboard for now which is the previous version of fireboard.

Are you going to be charging for access to the community?

    Hi, James.

Thanks for responding. I've spent the last few minutes poking around your membership website. It does have the components I'm looking for. What other Joomla extensions are installed?

Yes, I will be charging for membership to my site. I have lots to learn. I'll revisit your site when I have some more time.

    And David...

Thanks for your help, too. I've communicated back to you via email.

And lastly to the whole group...

It looks like Joomla has everything that I might need. Is there any reason why one would avoid Joomla?

    Thanks again,
    Brian
