I looked at a swag of stuff before aMember, most was over priced, under-performing and generally rubbish. aMember works, there are lots of things that could be made spiffier but do not fall for the trap of more more more == better!

If the system does what you need, ie manage users, collect money, automate most of the painful stuff then it has done its job. Newsletters .. we use IP.Board mass mail (tried a number of other things but until I write my own that's what we will use), reports definately more work needed there but reports are very personal, been looking at a scaffold for one of the php reporting tools but never seem to have enough time (and on and on).

FWIW .. we had our own subscription manager .. it had plugins to do the same sort of stuff aMember does we went to aMember because it handled things better for our users and I did not have the time to do the coding myself .. if (and I hope it does not happen) aMember stops being what we need on our membership site then JLogica will do it owns system but I would hate to think of all the work required to even get close to what we already have here!

I agree with everything you say jenolan...Amember is great at what it does, and I have yet to find anything else out there that is any better.

I think the gripes people have can be ordered in the following:
    1) If you emailed support at any time this year, they were saying a new version was going to be available as early as May. Then they told people July...And so on...

    2) Amember is not informing anyone publicly of a new release date. I think this makes a lot of people concerned (I know I am) that it just may be abandoned/left-for-dead.

    3) The software is starting to look dated. While it does work on a functional level, it leaves a lot to be desired from a "Look & Feel" stand point. The rumors have been promising that this is going to be the drastic improvement in the "next version" with a lot of new AJax, etc.

In short...If amember was a little better about communication (maybe just setting up a small "News" blog somewhere on their site to let us know the happenings), I think everyone would be 10x more content.

    That's my 2cents.

    boof...

    I agree 100% it is looking dated...HOWEVER...
They ARE working on a new version, at least that what they told me today.
No timeline, but that I can understand. Once you mention a timeline, and miss it...you have a riot on your hands. Confucious say " never promise deadline useless you want angry mob".

I can wait until next year and I'd even be willing to pay for a new version, if it is substantially better...I just hope they are going to make upgrading and importing current databases somewhat painless.

I wonder if a new version will be worth the upgrade when it comes out. Think about it, it has been so long since the last upgrade, this one must be big. This makes me think bugs!

I agree with Jenolan. I'll probably stay put till things get worked out. It works now, but man I'd love to see a new version!

Another 4 months and another year pass without word...anyone know of similar scripts out there?
It's too bad there is no real competition out there to light a fire under the developers.

Well, it's really not a good idea to discuss potential competition in a company forum, IMHO. Why do you need the new version so badly after all? I mean, sure, we all like new versions and there are some things that could possibly be done better than in the current version but it does the job, doesn't it?

    Hi Tomas,

I can't speak for everyone, but projects dictate time lines and functionality.

    1. I am redesigning an existing site. I can delay the redesign 30-90 days if needed as I would hate to redesign the site only to have a brand new version come out with new functionality and easier implementation requirements.

    2. I have an existing Amember site that has additional needs (shopping cart, ajax, etc). Since it has a number of years of Amember data/usage, I would prefer to stick with it but not knowing when or what 4.0 puts the upgrade at limbo or forces me to consider alternatives.

I suspect a number of us using Amember to run businesses are facing these same issues.
