    Hi!

I am using the new_rewrite method of protection AND I am using MS FrontPage to publish my site! Yeah, yeah..I know!

For the most part it seems to work, but every once and a while my /data/new_rewrite folder dissappears...(as I am writing this I think I am formulating my own answer).

This may be due to the fact that the /data/new_rewrite folder is usually EMPTY (except for some 0k binary session files, which FP does not see and can only been seen with ls -la)

I think that placing a single file in that directory, like a .gif or .jpg or maybe even a index.html "directory not browsable" doc would keep FrontPage from it's natural tendency of removing any empty (or whay it thinks is empty) directories.

    Anyone else have this issue???
I'll add some trash files in there to see if it works and I'll keep this thread posted.
    :)

I think if you put some file in amember/data/new_rewrite/ folder (on your local copy may be?) FrontPage will stop removing this folder.
It is better to configure FrontPage to DON'T TOUCH amember/ folder at all. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with this software, but I believe it should be possible somehow.

    still occurring...

    Hmm...

I gues this did not do the trick, today my new_rewrite directory was again removed by FrontPage.

What I also noticed is this:

If a user tries to enter the site while the new_rewrite directory is gone, their subscription end date seems to be reset to the year 2002, virtually expiring them. So, after you restore the new_rewrite directory, you need to go through your logs to find out who tried to access, then reset their membership OR wait until they complain that they can not enter and fix them as they come.

It would be nice to have a search option to look for expired (by date) users.

It would also be nice to have a search for ONLY pending users, since my offline (mail order) buyers need to be easily located once their check arrives.

    Thanks

Do you have shell access to the chmod and chown commands? I wonder if you could create a special group or user for that folder, apart from the ususal group/user you use to edit your other web files.

A file that you want to have fp access to allows read/write to user A in group A.

A file you don't want fp to access would allow read/write to user B in group B.

Both files A and B would remain world readable, as web files. However file B could only be written by a user or group that does not include fp.

    Steve,
it is just impossible that user expired just because new_rewrite folder was not exists. It is impossible, seek for other reasons why it could happen - I believe there are something, to be honest I don't have ideas yet.

Regarding that FrontPage removed this folder - did you try to create new_rewrite folder in your local site copy? And place a file inside?

Alex, you are are correct...It was probably something else, but I'm not sure what. I should not have mentioned it, because it is not something that I have been able to repeat.

The FrontPage thing may be OK, I am monitoring to see if it happens again.
FrontPage just loves to screw things up. :)

Thanks for your great support and an EXCELLENT script!

    Cheers!
