    Alex,

I'm trying to use new_rewrite through the admin CP/protect files.
I first got create folder /amemberpro/data/new_rewrite/ which I did.

    now I'm getting this Message:
(RewriteRule doesn't work in .htaccess files on this server)

    What am I doing wrong?

    Fredo,
looks like it must work on your site. If you send aMember CP login info to support, we could try to help.

When I try that file I get an internal server error. Does that mean I can't use this type of protection? I have justed turned mod_rewrite on and it didn't make a difference.

Ask your hosting WHY it results to internal server error.

    protection failure

I'm using new_rewrite also and it appears to be working for the most part however, there is a wierd bug in it's operation.

if I protect the directory /members and then try to go to it via http://mysite.com/members I am redirected to the login page (if I am not already logged in).

That is just fine. However if I am not logged in and I go to http://mysite.com/members/ (note trailing slash) it allows anyone access to the index page whether they are logged in or not. Now if you try and go to a specific page in the members dir like http://mysite.com/members/index.html it will work properly and block access. Is there any way around this situation where it doesn't porotect the index page if you access it with a trailing slash?

    Really would like to know.

    check your webserver configuration

Oops I replied with some suggestions before I had fully read what your problem is, and I can't seem to delete this message. Sorry, no idea.

FYI I figured out the problem I had with rewrite, above... it was nothing to do with aMember. I asked my server admin WHY it was giving me an internal server error, and he just shrugged his shoulders, looked in the mirror (I'm the server admin) and started to diagnose the problem. :)

In fact, it may not happen, but anything is possible :). Could you please provide URL of protected folder, and test username/passsword to support?

    new_rewrite problem

All of a sudden today, I got an error on my login script... so I check out the folder attributes, and for some reason it was chmod 705....

    /www/member/data/new_rewrite

should that folder be chmod 777?

It is possible that your admin should also enable AllowOverride option to allow mod_rewrite usage from .htaccess files.
