I had a recurring subscription set-up with PayPal as the payment gateway. This was working fine and users who did not have a PayPal account could pay with a credit card. Now, when I test the system again it says every time that 'You need a PayPal account for this purchase'. I am absolutely positive that there was an option before that stated you could complete payment with a credit card if you did not have a PayPal account. I even have a notice on my sign-up page that states you don't need a PayPal account - as it worked fine before. This is disastrous as I know this is going to turn a lot of customers away. Has anyone else had this problem? It is very frustrating and means that I have to find an alternative payment solution.
Unless I am very much mistaken it allowed me to sign up for a recurring subscription. But either way I need a second payment gateway. Arrghh..
I am fairly sure that PayPal is in the process of making it MUCH harder to just use a CC for payment in an attempt to force people to register and tether the CC to PayPal and this is why my company has started getting more "card refused" messages recently. I'll bet they have changed the security and fraud algorithms to make CC payments harder. The real reason is not security but the easy availability of better options and competition allowing "payment tarts" to hop around using different tools. Once PP has got you signed up, you're more likely to stay! Visit www.paypalsucks.com for more insight on how this company operates.
