I tried to protect a folder using the new re_write option, but the message I got was RewriteRule doesn't work in .htaccess files on this server.

What does this mean? Is there a way around this? Should I change my hosting server.

I am just following steps from some tutorial videos. Can someone please advise me on this matter. Thank you so much.

    Regards

    Barry

    Prblem Half Solved

    I found this post:

    http://www.amember.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3172

Where people are having the same problem.

I also could not access the http://mysite.com/amember/data/tests/mod_rewrite/1.php file.

I was also getting a 404 error and then my hosting company then did some trick and it worked. The help guy said he:
" Your .htaccess file was disallowing it to be shown."

Well I still get the new_rewrite (RewriteRule doesn't work in .htaccess files on this server) ERROR. I still cannot protect my member folder.

    Any ideas anyone?

Has nobody got any information about how to sort out this problem for me. I am so close to getting my site sorted. My hosting company says that is has enabled re-write and I have not heard from Alex.

Please if you have had this problem and sorted it out please tell me. I see that many people have had this problem and was wondering if it was only server related or a problem that only Alex could fix.

    Thanks so much.

Was the .htaccess file created in your protect folder? I had that problem early on, and just had to change permissions temporarily.

If you got help and fixed it, please share it. Thanks.

Alex fixed it for me, I submitted a ticket. He must have created the .htaccess file that is now in that folder. The problem is, that I do not know how to create a .htaccess file and what to put in it. I must admit that if you are a total newbie to .htaccess, aMember, Linux/Unix, PHP it really is a terrible problem trying to get this all working.
