what are the reasons to turn cron jobs on; what exactly does it do when it runs? Also, is it necessary to have it run so often (as in the manual default: 1 * * * *). Could cron be set to run only once a day and would that cause any problems or issues?

aMember has built-in cron, but it will work regullary only if someone access your aMember pages often. Also, if you are using "credit card" payment plugin, you will be asked to enable external cron, and it is really necessary.

    emails from cron

I get emails from cron letting me know it has made a run. The follwing is the response and it looks as though there is a problem:

    --
Alert!: Unable to connect to remote host.

    lynx: Can't access startfile http://mydomain.com/amember/cron.php?pass=mycronpassword
    --

what would cause this problem? (I changed the domain and password in this post for personal reasons, but the path is otherwise the same).

mydomain.com -> replace to your domain name
mycronpassword - replace to one you entered at aMember Cp -> Setup -> Advanced.

Before inserting URL into cron job, try to run it from your browser.

    cron job settings

Yes, I have done that. I only posted "mydomain" and "mycronpassword" in this forum. I did not want to post my real password and other related info. Anyway, I'll try running again and "from the browser" and get back here if there seems to be other problems.

Cron setup looks OK, but still get alert

I have set the cron in CP and matched url and password with amember everything looks OK. However, I still get the following as part of the cron email message:

Alert!: Unable to connect to remote host.

    lynx: Can't access startfile

Any idea what may be wrong? The url and password settings are correct. Could it be because I have not yet setup any products? Also, how can you run cron from the browser? I am not sure exactly how to do that.
