I plan on starting a site soon that will also use a discussion board plug-in. I have spent a lot of time looking at the aMember supported boards and they all meet my requirements.

I will probably make my decision based on the best compatibility with aMember Pro. So the question to aMember staff is... which forum would you use based on current aMember plug-in capabilities and future plug-in upgrades.

Thank you in advance for the help!

IMO IPB is a very great product. It all depends on how you intend to use this product and on what board software.

Give us a general idea of what you had in mind "process wise" and then we should be able to give some more feedback.

Yes, I recommend you IPB a lot.

Also, you may have a look to vBulletin board.

I have owned, installed, operated and used both of those and others ( phpbb, yabb, ikonboard, etc ),. But the best for functionality is FUDForum at http://fud.prohost.org/. and it is FREE.

Recognizing we all have our favorite forum, it is way ahead of all of these. IMHO :)

I cringe every time I have to use a vB. And to think I spent a bunch of money on it!

Yes, fudForum is not a bad product.
I tried to implement plugin for it and I was unable to finish, as it has TOO complicated permission system. But, if it used standalone, I think it is good enough.

So is IPB. Invision Power Board
They are coming out with 1.2 version soon and it's awesome!

The site here uses IPB. Enough said on that subject.

They have a mod site IBPlanet This is a great support site to have add on things created. If it's a good idea, someone will more than likely coded it for free.

well, i've always thought that ipb would be my second choice. it is certainly has a better implementation of features than vB.

I took a look at 1.2rc2 and its new features are: Topic Multi Moderation(???), Member Warning System, Search Engine Spider Recognition and New Skinning Tools.

As stated earlier, all the forums will work for me, I was just interested if there was a favorite from aMembers point of view. I looks like IPB might get the nod, especially since it is used on aMember's site.

It looks like another consideration is how steep the template/skinning learning curve is. I have looked at the template/skinning information on both the IPB and vB sites and it looks like it is gonna be a time consumer....

I am leaning towards IPB, but it looks like its template/skinning scheme is going to be hard to master. I understand the basic concept, but I can't seem to find a comprehensive guide to the IPB templates. It would help if you knew what template components affected specific areas of the pages.

Does anybody know where to get comprehensive information about the template/skinning schemes of both IPB and vB?

    Thanks for the help!

I would say that if you are looking for a current solution that is more "mature" then VB would be better. I can't speak for VB, but I have been on alot of VB boards... IPB is a newcomer, and it's people broke away from a "mature" BB company, to build something better.

IPB seems to be an up-and-comer, with alot great ideas... They are lacking "some" of the features and the large mod base that other boards have, but they are moving up very quickly!

A suggestion would be to visit big boards running both pieces of software and use them for awhile before making a choice. Ease of use for users is extremly important.

If you wish a list of big IPB boards just PM me and I will send it to ya...

I'm sure some of the VB users will do the same.

    Cheers
