Hi. I have some questions I was hoping to have help with, please. I'm an absolute beginner with this kind of thing and don't know what I'm doing. What I want to do is to set up a site that can be subscribed to through PayPal that offers downloads that are password-protected. I want all downloads to be accessible through a single subscription, rather than charging for each individual download. If this is not the service for me to do this with, can someone please suggest what else I might use? Anyway, here are the problems I'm having, trying to use the aMember thing: I copied everything in the free .zip to my site and followed the installation instructions. When it came to the point where I have to create the two .php files, I wasn't sure how you create them... I just made a couple of files in Notepad with the names that it said to give the .php files. I don't know if that will work or not. I know that .php can be embedded into .html files, but I don't know what to make them from when the type of file is, itself, .php, so I don't know if I did that right or not. When I was all done with these things, I went to the U.R.L. on my site that I was told to go to. The instructions were: Run your favorite browser and go to url: http://www.yoursite.com/amember/setup.php So I did that and got a setup page. First of all, it asks for the root U.R.L. of script... Does that mean the root U.R.L. of the site or does it mean the U.R.L. where I want it to start to take effect? Which of these does it mean? http://www.mysite.com or http://www.mysite.com/This/isthe/URL/thatIwant/tobesetupwith/amember I also don't understand "Substitute member password in urls?" As for the next page, which is where I couldn't get past, it asks for SQL information. I know nothing about this kind of thing, as well, or even if I have it enabled on my site, let alone what my username and password would be. I tried to use the username and password for my site, itself, even though I knew it wouldn't work. I basically don't know what to say for any of the fields on the second page. Some people would say I should contact the web hosting company I have my domain name and site at, but I have contacted them many times over numerous things and they do not help at all or give me answers to any of my questions. I learned much too late that there are a LOT of complaints about them over such things and other problems. They are probably the worst web hosting company I have ever heard of and it's a shame I only found out recently. Anyway, hostonce is who hosts my site and I can't get any information out of them about anything, EVER. Please help me, someone, if you can. I'd really appreciate it. Thank you.
I think the first thing to say is that it looks like your site is on a Windows server, since those are the only type of server the host you are with offers. This means that aMember will not work for you - it only works (to the best of my knowledge anyway) on a *nix server. From what you say there is an arguement for changing host. I really do not mean to sound mean or harsh in saying this, but given that you admot you know so little about all this, it might be best to go for a paid script and have it installed for you. In the end that is probably going to be a heck of a lot cheaper than all the time it will take to learn what you need to know. Having said all that, there is a good asp script that will do what you want on a Windows server - called 'Spooky Login', search for it at Hotscripts.
I'm sorry, but it is bad idea to try install the script without basic knowledges. "URL" is a basic concept of WWW! If you don't know what is it, please read a book. I recommend you to ask us to make installation.
I do know what a U.R.L. is. That isn't what I said. I asked what the U.R.L. is that I need to go to in order to find the options I'm looking for. Instead of being cocky and telling me to read a book, please read carefully what I asked. I am supposed to be looking for "setup/configuration" and I don't see it in the control panel. I have more than a basic knowledge of computers. I am just not very experienced with this kind of thing. Can someone please answer?
Sorry, I was confused by your question regarding URL. Disable option regarding passwords in URL. You should conctact your hosting support regarding MySQL connection info. Nobody else can help.
It's all right. I actually found another post about this elsewhere in these forums that you answered. You told someone that the free version doesn't have those options. Thanks, anyway. I know that, if you pay a thirty or forty dollar fee, you don't have to have the link on your site with use of the script... If you pay for installation, does that option come with the installation, by any chance? Or is the right to not put the link on your site an additional charge? Thanks again.
I will keep the link if I end up using the script and don't pay for it, but I would prefer the option to not keep the link if I end up paying for it. I haven't decided yet what to do, especially if that option doesn't come with installation. If I can get the script to work and use it... Well, I'd prefer to install it, myself, and pay not to have the link.
