SSL needed?

I don't know much about this whole SSL thing but I'm reading it's necessary when doing credit card transactions. What protection does aMember already have to keep payment info and user/pass stuff safe? Should I get an SSL certificate from my webhost?

Are you processing the credit cards on your system, or are you sending them to a 3rd party like paypal to do the transaction?
