I am trying to achieve the following:
    $30 annual membership fee
$30 voucher to be used for the first year (ie. free first year membership)

    Setup 1:
Product X (gives access to vb and efront)
$30 annual fee for first year
    $30 for every recurring year.
    $30 use once, non-recurring coupon

PROBLEM: amember asks for credit card for $0 first payment to progress ($0 payments are rejected by payment gateway)

    Setup 2:
Product Y (2013 membership) (gives access to vb and efront)
    $30 for one year access
    non recurring
$30 coupon for one use on product Y only
OK: no payment needed because of $0 transaction with no recurring payment

Product Z (2014 memebrship) (gives access to vb and efront)
    $30 for one year access
    non recurring
    OK

    (?potential) PROBLEM :
-when customer purchases product Y, their usernames are created in vb and efront
-after 1 yr, if the product Y expires, are their usernames removed? and if their purchase of product Z went through a discontinued period, will they receive access to the same user account in vb and efront as before?
-also, what happens when someone purchases product Z when their product Y still hasnt expired?

    Ray,
amember should ask CC info in this situation because user signup for recurring subscription. Without CC info aMember will not be able to rebill user. However if you unable to complete signup because as you said: ($0 payments are rejected by payment gateway), this seems to be a bug in plugin. Contact us in helpdesk.
User is not being removed on expiration, but he will be unassigned from paid groups/courses.
When he renew his membership (or purchase different product) his access will be restored.
If both products give the same level of access, then nothing will happens.
If products give different level of access, user will be added to additional groups.
