Will anything happen if cron jobs aren't running?

Other than email going out?

The system may have logs build up.
Are you processing Credit Cards locally, this wont get done.

How do I know if cron is running ok

So does this mean I should receive an email if cron is not running? we dont use recurring billing? How do I know if I cron is working ok? Do i need to set up cron jobs?

You should set up a cron job. If you have it set incorrectly, amember will give you an error in the admin page that cron hasnt run in XX hours.
